Luis and his new beer stems Date/Time: 2010:05:11 17:25:39 "Who can deny the power of good design? Luis saw the glasses on your web site, we ordered them, and he went out and bought beer. Everything arrived safely and in perfect condition. So many wonderful surprises in store - the Mexican vase was delightfully larger in scale than I'd imagined and so rich in color, while the Rosenthal nut dish was so charmingly small and delicate. The Ray-Bans are beyond cool. I've never been one to invest in sunglasses before, and probably because I never had a good reason until now. The best part, collectively speaking, was when I tucked away these new treasures into various parts of my home/life, it felt like they'd been there for years. Part of the texture. My texture. Seriously, thanks for all you do to keep the past in plain sight. We can't lose it, or we lose out. Kristin"

Bill's Home 1 (click on this photo for added information) Date/Time: 2008:08:11 14:02:36 "Dear Ronn, Hello again from Lawrence, KS. I stopped by your shop last week and we had a good talk. It was great meeting you and next time I'm in Norfolk I'll definitely stop by and say hello. You've got a lot of great stuff in your shop. Attached are some random pics I culled that I've taken of our house. I thought you'd appreciate these. The house was built in 1955 for a well known economics professor at KU and his family. They wanted a blend of modern and traditional. It was built on a budget for $18,100, I still have the receipt. The living room features pecky cypress, which was stained a light blue color and is quite beautiful to look at. The house was designed by a young architect right out of the School of Architecture named Bob Hess, who is still alive and well and retired in Santa Barbara at age 83. After I bought the house and found the original drawings I tracked him down and we've become good friends. I invited him to come back to Lawrence in May to give a talk to our mid-century modern group here. It was a great event, a lot of university people as well showed up at our house. I've included a photo of him here as he was delivering his talk. I've also included a pic of my old '59 Cadillac, just because I know you'd get a kick out of it. Still regret selling this beast." . . . . (Bill and I met October 2009 while in my store. He recognized my name on the business card, and we eventually figured out we'd blogged together over design issues on a site from which we have since departed. This was a fun discovery, and we had a great talk. Ronn.)

Scott & Tarra's discovery in the 9th ward of New Orleans (Click on photo for their story) Date/Time: 2009:02:27 16:09:44 Tarra and I came down to the upper ninth ward to do some work with Habitat for Humanity for a couple of days. I didn't want to... but felt it was necessary to comprehend the destruction and neglect to the lower ninth ward... so after our second day in new Orleans, we commandeered a friend and her rental car to drive us through the lower ninth in face of potential harm. we drove for a mile before I got of the car to snap photos of abandoned home after abandoned home.... empty lots that have addresses spray painted on the crumbled foundations that used to support somebody's home that no longer exist... and then half way between a block of an abandoned church and empty lots.... i stepped on a concrete foundation and walked to its edge to see a Mulhauser Plycraft gem in the middle of nowhere amidst wood used to board up a home no longer there. It was my last shot of the day. i wept and never got out of the car again until we got back to the hotel. I could’ve stopped anywhere in the ninth... what was creepy about the photo is that the red board in the background had a faded picture of a heart spray painted on it when I rolled the Mulhauser off it. The first person that came to mind standing there amidst the tall grass covering loose remains of neighborhood that stood and housed generations of African-American families since the last grips of Louisiana slavery was a good friend named Ronn, a modern antique collector who has made me the proud owner of three of these beautiful chairs over the last ten years. It took me a couple a minutes to focus myself as if it weren't real. I even looked around to see if by some fucked up chance there were cameras on me... like a joke. I gasped for a minute... telling myself over and over, "no fuggin' way that’s what i think it is?!", like a mother would refuse horrific news from a teacher about their child fighting in school or something. I screamed for Tarra as I was stooping down to confirm what I already knew... the shape of those dried out arms... it was sad. Tarra, thought I was being funny for a split a second, but the idea of making something like that up, standing in the middle of the lower ninth ward with no one in sight and not a soul for at least a mile in any direction... well, it was just ludicrous. I stood up to take one of many panoramic canvases... and just started to cry... I walked down the street pretending as if I were taking pictures wiping my face of tears as I came upon a dilapidated burgundy-rust painted house still standing in defiance of gravity with only one last story left spray painted on its front doors... On Sept 19, 2005, the Florida FEMA search and rescue task force found five dead within its walls still exposing its water line with mold at its gutter line. To my accounts, we were close to the levee break in the lower ninth, but our acquaintance Simone, informed us that she made the drive earlier in the week to coming to a halt to a sign the simply read, "CRIME HAPPENS HERE", and that we needed to leave anyway because of the hour. After all this time...there are still no streetlamps in the lower ninth. When it's dark out... it's well, DARK. We drove around for about another hour surveying other hard hit areas making visual socio-economical assessments... you saw the areas that got recovered as a community and you saw the areas that looked as if they were left for dead. I never dreamed that I could see abuse that fails humanity... in America, like what we saw... at home, in America. You can still pick up a Times-Picayune, the local paper, and still read Post Katrina news on the front page. Every day we were here, the paper's front page represented a major point of struggle between helping people recover their lives and what to do with 5.1 billion dollars in unused funds for Katrina... which the city has been sitting on. The city is beautiful. The leadership in this city.... well, let’s just say that there is a special circle in hell for those people. It was about three months ago. I was pulling up to the house in an otherwise traditional drive home from Hampton, having stopping at my local Walgreens to pick up a myriad of junk foods in preparation for some late night internet surfing or Xbox session and pulling into a darkened neighborhood. Tarra traditionally would’ve been fast asleep. It was a Saturday. It was about 4:38 in the morning. I know that because I had to look at my watch in disbelief as I panned my from switching my headlights off to removing my keys out of the ignition as I was trying to comprehend why all the lights were on in the house... well, not all of them, but enough to say, “What the hell”? There, sitting balled up on the couch completely captivated at the television, Tarra sat. She was unmoved at my entry. We exchanged hellos and small dialogue. I tell could she was annoyed at my inquiry and banter as to what she was watching. “a documentary”, she said quickly, never taking her eyes off of the TV. She really wanted me to stop talking and making noises I would’ve otherwise made coming home... dropping my stuff, talking to the cat, taking my shoes off in the most complicated way that involves holding on to a wall and trying to pull my feet out without untying the laces. I looked to the television to view an angry Reverend Al Sharpton speaking on something in regards to W. Bush. I thought, “what the hell are you doing up at this hour watching something about W.?” I began to internalize my options of going to bed or seizing the opportunity to hang with my special lady friend and sit through a documentary I had already labeled as shit based off of the content of which I gave my attention to... but then I figured I was already going to be up for at least an hour doing my traditional unwind routine after a thirteen hour day, so why the hell not? I spring into action knowing that even with Tarra still awake, I had minutes not hours, so I made some microwave popcorn and cracked a root beer. I come around the corner into the living room with all of these movie provisions seeming as if I was about to engage in the entire star wars catalog excited to be able to sit down, finally. Tarra finally glares at me in an instant to convey a visual “you’re a dumbass with all of that shit” look. She was so captivated that it truly looked as if she was exerting extreme amounts of effort to tell me what was going on in the film. I grabbed a handful of popcorn and shoved it in my mouth. CRUNCH-CRUNCH!!!!! …and then crunching stopped…. Everything stopped. The negligent attention I had minutes before given the film turned to hypnotism. Images of bloated dead bodies on cars, floating in the water, a mother with her three children huddled on the top of a ford f-150 in rising waters waiting to be rescued, people screaming that they couldn’t swim were but some of the last moments in the documentary I sat down to. There was a pause... and the music from the documentary... sad violins. "It’s a documentary on hurricane Katrina", Tarra crackled, "That was act two and there are four of them". I just sat there all somber looking as if somebody had stolen my bike right in front of me. “I’m going to bed. Its five minutes to six,” she stammered as she was clicking the television off and standing up. We make a visual exchange of emotional fatigue and then she retires to bedroom. I sat in silence for 5 to 6 minutes, staring at a hanging spaghetti lamp providing the only light in a house that looked like it was hosting a party an hour before, wondering how in the hell I intended to go to sleep after seeing that... and then decided to stay up to watch the whole film from the start not having once faded off from the great deal of exhaustion I definitely had when I had arrived home. It was 10:30am before I finished the film in its entirety. The film was a catalyst of sorts, but that is what ultimately led us down there. I just had never seen anything like that before...

This room also has the Heywood Wakefield buffet that we use for a dresser. I love these night stands. I like the shapes of all of the Heywood Wakefield stuff. And, I like the fact that we have some pieces that are round and some that are sharp. All of it is awesome. - Darcy
Brooks and Darcy's office Date/Time: 2006:09:03 09:43:19 "In our office we needed a variety of work surfaces and practical storage. What you don't see opposite (this photo) is a built in desk with cabinets that holds our PC and all the other required office electronics. The Heywood Wakefield desk and the awesome table is wonderful in keeping the office productive yet adding fun and design in that room. We found the table, hiding, along the wall in your shop. We love the colors and the design of the table, it is perfect in adding work space. And the Heywood Wakefield desk was a great find and one of my favorite pieces. - Darcy"
Brooks and Darcy's second floor landing area Date/Time: 2006:09:03 10:07:51 I absolutely love the love seat and chair. This is the set we recovered leaving the original fabric under the new cushion covers. And, the Heywood Wakefield lamp table has an awesome shape. Fun stuff for this area of our house. - Darcy

Jerry Tompkins Home Date/Time: 2004:01:05 11:03:44 "I think the vase looks great with the twisted vine, Japanese base and frog. It's one of my favorite piece's of pottery. I need to write a Haiku for it. The vase appears to be by an Asian artist and was created by a very talented potter. It is 8 inches tall and 5 inches wide. The piece is signed but very difficult to read. I purchased it last year at Futures. We think it is a wonderful addition to our house, and has a place of honor on a special display wall. Jerry Tompkins Home 2 Date/Time: 2006:06:29 14:36:24 This green glass vase is beautifully designed with the indentations on the INside. It's probably Italian and made by a very talented artist. It's 8 inches tall and 4 inches wide. Light is captured by the inside ovals and creates beautiful patterns from all angles. It looked great without flowers and is superb with an arrangement. Jerry Tompkins Home 3 Date/Time: 2006:06:29 14:34:47 This beautifully made yellow glass bowl in the form of a flower with a green center is an excellent example of Italian creativity. It's approx. 8 inches wide and 4 inches deep. We set it up against a small flower batik that brought out the colors of both beautifully. It's a fine addition to our house and we are both proud to have and enjoy it. Jerry Va. Beach
Jerry Tompkins Home 4 Date/Time: 2006:06:23 14:57:12 This extremely well made covered bowl is signed and made by Charles Halling. He earned B.F.A. in ceramics from Kansas City Art Institute. His work is shown in many galleries and has been presented to dignitaries from Japan. The lid is especially attractive with the beautiful character design. The bowl is inches by 4 inches and has beautiful color and design qualities. We are very proud to own it. I wish we could get more. Jerry Va. Beach
Jerry Tompkins Home 5 Date/Time: 2006:06:23 15:02:52 This bowl was a real treasure to find. The glaze is the most unusual I've ever seen. It's in the form of a Chrysanthemum and is obviously Japanese. The bowl is 10inches across and 4inches high. It's beauty is such that we can't put anything actually IN IT. We enjoy seeing it ALL. It is one of the best pieces of pottery we have ever collected. The artist, whoever it may have been is certainly a master of their craft. Jerry Va. Beach
Jerry Tompkins Home 6 Date/Time: 2006:06:23 15:05:47 The serigraph is by well know California artist, D. Walmsley and is titled Fall Foliage. It's 16X14inches and also has the white cloud formation formed by embossing. I wanted it the first time I saw it. It hangs in a place of honor in our main living room and has been admired by many who have seen it. It's an outstanding addition to our house. I only wish Ronn could find another for us. Superb craftsmanship! Truly a jewel of color, content and talent. Jerry Va. Beach

Our Home - Master bedroom Date/Time: 2007:07:23 05:49:58 From 1980 until 1995, I lived in a 1949 home totally given over to Art Deco, especially American 30's and 40's. The architecture, although not Deco, was of the thick walled, small windowed, low ceilinged variety common before the 1950's. When we moved to a 1958 split level home with an open floor plan, high ceilings, lots of light and air, and walls of glass, the Deco furnishings were suddenly and totally inappropriate for the architecture. I took a deep breath and admitted we had to start over... except for one room... the master bedroom, which had thick walls, small windows, and was segregated from the open floor plan. Here it still worked, and this way we could hang on to some of our favorite Deco pieces. This is the only room in the house with pre-WWII decor. Family photos and 1920's-50's mannequin heads cover the Norman Bel Geddes desk/vanity. It is bordered by Mies van der Rohe Brno chairs.

Our Home (Laura Dailey Abstract Expressionist oil on canvas SET (7 & 9) Date: 08/10/2009 Title "Impact", set of two paintings (also #9, titled "Conflict"), oil on canvas, no frames. Artist Laura Dailey Abstract Expressionist Laura Dailey was a well-trained, dedicated Artist, who painted throughout her life, creating strong, emotional images, and, was not concerned with the spotlights of the bigger art market. "Abstract Expressionism" was THE art movement of the 1940's - 1960's, and although worldwide, centered in the U.S.. Dailey did not reach the god-like levels of the famous Abstract Expressionists such as Jackson Pollock, Willem DeKooning, Franz Kline, and Robert Motherwell. This does NOT lessen her work. It is very strong, intelligent Art. ALL of “it” is right there in front of you (if you're willing to see it): she was energized by oil paint, brushes, and canvas; the formal issues of composition, color, texture, and light; and the symbolic abstraction of emotional and intellectual states: encountering, differing, opposing, struggling, clashing, the violence, and the resolution. In Dailey's last years, she went blind. Is there anything worse for an artist? Even DeKooning, who was slowly stricken with Alzheimer’s, continued to make beautiful paintings. He still had his vision. The independent appraiser who originally valued Dailey's estate and work, set the price of each painting around $40,000. I think he's wrong. It is too high for now. I purchased the entire collection. They were done in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. One painting is now on view. This has been an exciting time for me, because, as occasionally happens, I feel I've discovered an otherwise lesser known Artist, and perhaps saved her from oblivion. By that I mean, FUTURES is more likely to be a venue that will cause fresh appreciation for this Artist’s work - than if, god forbid - the work had been destroyed, or divided up and “basemented” into the homes of reluctant relatives. I don't mean to say that FUTURES is the "fast track" to fame. It's not. The Art world is much more complex than that. However, I DO locate, save, research, and represent good things that deserve another look...or even a first real look. This way, it is more likely such items will end up in places where they will be cared for, and their appreciation will continue, and grow, at a higher level. It heartens me to see that others have begun to savor/invest in/purchase these works of Art, and, that my efforts may help save her wonderful expressions. THIS IS what it's all about. I am grateful she worked so hard, tuned into her personal feelings, and used her formal training to express them intelligently. Ronn Ives, owner FUTURES Antiques

Our Home in New Classic Style Date: 06/28/2006 FAQ: “How did you get IN this book?” A: I was contacted in 2001, and asked if I would assist “Better Homes and Gardens” in locating Modernist-oriented homes, for an upcoming book. I agreed, and over the next year directed the Editor to a number of wonderful homes. In the process, the Editor became curious about my home, and asked if I would provide shots. Other articles about my home and store have been done for television, newspapers, and magazines, but I was often misquoted, misunderstood, or edited to the point of looking like an idiot, so I didn’t “jump” at this offer. Instead, I shot about twenty interior photos of our home, and asked the Editor to “analyze” them - i.e., tell me what she saw. WOW! She not only understood what I was doing, but could express it! - which was very encouraging to me. This was a special person. So, I agreed to move ahead on the book, with the provision that I have a “say” in editing the final text. She agreed, and I believed her. Their team came to Virginia a few months later, for a three-day photo shoot. Then, another year later...after numerous phone & email interviews, spelling & fact confirmations, etc....the book was done. I think ALL the homes in New Classic Style are interesting, intelligent, and inspiring...even if I wouldn’t want to live in all of them. “New Classic Style” also has a section on design history, major designers, and listings for Modernist resources (such as FUTURES Antiques, I’m proud to say!). This book just went out of print. Our home is featured as Chapter Three. Working with Better Homes & Gardens/Meredith Publishers was an absolute pleasure. They are true artists and professionals.
